I have always wanted art to surround me. I was one of those kids who lost the privilege of having crayons in my room because I drew all over the walls. This irresistible impulse continued in high school when I discovered my love of acrylics and, without permission, painted on furniture and doors in my parent’s basement. Eventually, I channeled this passion onto canvas. Painting has been an essential part of my identity, therapy, and pleasure practice ever since. I work primarily with acrylic paint and mixed media such as paper, string, hair, netting, and other found objects on canvas to create textured, vibrant, and emotional abstract pieces. I am inspired by abstract impressionism and modern art, particularly the use of color, splatter, shapes, and composition.
Painting is a lifeline for me and my creative process is medicinal, serving to express that which cannot be articulated any other way and processing the energies that my body absorbs from the world and people around me. I never plan a piece in advance nor have any idea what it will look like when it’s finished. Instead, I embark on a journey of interacting with the paints, brushes, palette knives, and mixed media. I explore movement, boundaries, and depth by layering paint, moving away from and towards the piece, and flipping the canvas many times as I work. There is no right way for the painting to be oriented, there is no right or wrong stroke, it is all intuitive and ever evolving.
